The most recent project of a fruitful collaboration between MERIDIAN and CEOTR at Dalhousie University is the installation of an AIS (automatic identification system) antenna at Sandy Cove. Since installed on February 16th 2023, the antenna is feeding AIS data to our server and live and cleaned vessel tracks can be seen here.
Vessel tracks are fed and cleaned through the open-source software AISDB, which is useful for anyone who studies AIS data independent of the AIS data source. Documentation and instructions can be found here.
The installation was performed by AIS expert Matthew Smith (MERIDIAN), data manager Jason Newport (MERIDIAN), and CODAR/Field Technician Tamara Wilson (CEOTR). We thank the National Research Council for being able to use their facilities.
